Markham thanks Mrs. Goewey for the Browning souvenir and is sorry for the late response. He is finding it hard to stay focused with the war this year. Markham lthinks it charming that she has enscrolled Brownings reliquary. He hopes she will come for a vist and he has books for her.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...
